He’s not going to see yellow for that offence

Birmingham and Everton played out a 1-1 draw at Goodison Park last night, but by far the most memorable moment of the match was referee Peter Walton showing an invisible card to Blues midfielder Jordon Mutch.

Walton attempted to book the 19-year-old, only to discover that he had left his cards in the dressing room. After a brief, frantic rummage around his pocket, the ref decided to show Mutch an imaginary card instead.

Now, if Mutch had really wanted to make Walton look like a mug he should have started walking off the pitch saying he thought it was an invisible red card!

I’ve seen a local ref end up in this situation. I asked him about it afterwards. He said he had been trained to point to an item of the appropriate colour while saying, clearly enough that it can be both heard and lip-read, “I am showing you a yellow card.” Which is what he did.
