Will Scots be in hot water for racism?

Claims by Brazil’s goalscoring hero Neymar that he was racially abused during yesterday’s 2-0 victory over Scotland appear to be backed up by these pictures from yesterday’s match at the Emirates.

A banana is clearly thrown at the Santos striker as he weaves his way into the penalty area. A bemused Gary Caldwell looks very puzzled by the episode, while Liverpool’s Lucas Leiva carts the offending piece of fruit of the pitch. Referee Howard Webb watches a potential mid-game snack disappear.

Neymar himself has complained about the incident on Brazilian TV.

The 19-year-old said: “This atmosphere of racism is totally sad. We leave our country to play here and something like this happens.”

The incident happened in the penalty area nearest the Brazil fans, and the Scottish FA are in denial mode.

A spokesman said: “There has been no such incident reported to the police or the stadium safety officer.”

That’s all well and good, but you might want to watch the video above: it definitely happened. It’s just a question of who’s to blame and why did they throw it. Let’s hope it was just a celebratory piece of yellow fruit from a Brazil fan.
