La Liga side Getafe will carry the alternative name ‘Team Dubai’ from next season after a takeover by the Royal Emirates Group.
Chaired by a member of Dubai’s ruling Al-Maktoum family, the group has paid “between 70 and 90m euros” to buy Getafe.
Part of the deal will see the new ‘Team Dubai’ moniker added to the club crest.
The new owners have set their sights pretty high – they want to overtake local rivals Real Madrid.
Royal Emirates managing director Kaiser Rafiq said: “For the coming year, we are definitely going to secure a position in the top six.
“Our vision is to now beat Real Madrid.”
Now, we can’t imagine the club who invented the inside shirt advertising (see above) being too fussy about the club crest, but surely they could have come up with something a bit more imaginative than Team Dubai.
