Real Madrid had their hands on the Copa Del Rey for a matter of hours before they managed to break it!
Defender Sergio Ramos dropped the trophy from the top of the open-top bus. The silverware landed under the front wheel of the vehicle and was immediately run over.
Ramos said: “The cup fell, it fell. But the cup is OK.”
Police retrieved the trophy from under the bus and later returned it to the driver. Despite Ramos’ assurances that all is well, the cup has not been seen publicly since and was absent from Real’s traditional trophy festivities at the Cibeles Fountain in central Madrid.
Barcelona will no doubt be convinced that the incident proves Real – who hadn’t lifted the Copa Del Rey for 18 years – should not be entrusted with the trophy.
