If the England Under 21s’ European Championship campaign bore similarities to the senior squad’s last international tournament opening, yesterday’s opening match in the Women’s World Cup was opener.

England found themselves in front and in control against CONCACAF opposition before a goalkeeping howler from a speculative long-range effort caught them cold and forced them to settle for a 1-1 draw.
