The Mayor of Milan has written to an enterprising Newcastle fan to confirm that a Mackem has never been seen in the Italian city.

Twitter user iwantcurlyhair2 wrote to the Comune di Milano asking whether a Sunderland native had ever been seen in the vicinity. And it turns out that they haven’t.

The letter relates to an old chant that started when Newcastle held Inter Milan to a 2-2 draw at the San Siro in 2003 and observed that they were some what better travelled than their North East rivals

The gag was reignited based on comments made by Magpies full-back Davide Santon when he joined the club in August. Spurred on by their Twitter followers, newspaper The Chronicle asked Santon whether he had “ever seen a Mackem in Milan”.

Santon said: “I have never seen them in Milan, no. Maybe I won’t see that for a long time.

“But I hope to go into Europe with Newcastle. It would be a dream come true and something I want.”

Determined to prove that it was true that a Mackem had never been seen in Milan, iwantcurlyhair2 fired off his letter. And he was delighted with the outcome.

He tweeted: “I honestly never thought I would get any replies… I write more letters than the alphabet but this last one even made me stop with shock.”
