It’s fair to suggest that the mood in the Arsenal pre-season camp may not be bubbling, despite the squad having just returned from what looked like a thoroughly enjoyable tour of the Far East.
The reasons for that are the on-going Robin Van Persie transfer saga, the recent news that Jack Wilshere may not be fit until October and the simmering contract stand-off between the club and winger Theo Walcott. Things are far from perfect at the Emirates.
But it seems that nobody has told Per Mertesacker, Lukas Podolski and Bacary Sagna. The Gunners trio were filmed dancing at a club fan day in Lagos, Nigeria, over the weekend.
Arsenal shelved plans to send the full squad to Africa pre-season, but didn’t completely let down their Nigerian fan base by sending the German duo and Frenchman to satisfy the crowds.
The players got down and dirty to the ‘Malta Guinness Low Sugar Workout’. Particularly impressive is Mertesacker or, if you prefer, the ‘BFG’ (Big Friendly German) who proved the old cliche of ‘good feet for a big man’ right.
Sagna shows rhythm and timing, and Podolski adds to his performing repertoire after his previous musical endeavours. During a close season of transfer sadness, rumour silliness and fitness boredom, this is sure to cause you to crack a smile.
