This arguably wins the prizes for the best goalkeeping 15 minutes of the season and the ballsiest refereeing pedantry of all time.
With Universitario leading 1-0 against Oriente Petrolero, they were awarded a penalty by the referee. Jose Gabriel Rios was the man to step forward, but he saw his spot kick saved by the goalkeeper.
The referee had other ideas, however, ordering the penalty to be retaken after claiming that the goalkeeper had moved off his line. Cue futile arguments from Petrolero players.
Amazingly, Arias saved a second penalty saved by the goalkeeper, who understandably went mad in celebration. Ridiculously, the referee again ordered the penalty to be taken again for the same ‘offence’, and chaos ensued.
Petrolero players and staff walked off the field in protest, and it took ten minutes for the officials to finally get the game underway. Unbelievably, the goalkeeper Arias saved the penalty for the third time.
The best thing about the whole matter? Arias blatantly came off his line for the third penalty!
Only in South America…
