There were some raised eyebrows when Emile Heskey made the decision to move to the Australian A-League after his release from Aston Villa. In truth, the move always looked a good idea, firstly because the standard of football there is lower than the Premier League, but also because in England he had almost turned into a joke figure, which is slightly harsh for a player that has been picked by four different England managers.

Anyway, Emile has started off in style by scoring on just his second appearance. After an initial cross was blocked, the Newcastle Jets midfielder centred the ball to the edge of the six-yard box, where Heskey was able to pounce and volley home emphatically. The goal turned out to be crucial as the Jets won 3-2 away at Sydney FC, for whom Alessandro Del Piero scored a gorgeous free kick.

Commentators and pundits were hugely impressed with Heskey’s performance, and the striker held up the ball impressively all game.
