Senegal against the Ivory Coast was always going to be a spicy affair with African Cup of Nations qualification at stake, and so it proved in Dakar when fans rioted and caused the match to be abandoned.

Didier Drogba had just scored a penalty for the Ivory Coast to put them 2-0 up on the night and 6-2 on aggregate, when fans began to rip our seats and throw flares, bottles and lumps of concrete onto the pitch and surrounding area. Some even lit fires in the stands.

The referee initially took the players off for a forty minute period, but after discussions with Police decided to abandon the game entirely.

It is thought that CAF may choose to let the result stand rather than play the last fifteen minutes at any point behind closed doors, and Senegal are likely to face severe sanctions for the incident.
