Ex-West Ham striker Savio Nsereko may have been something of a flop in East London (and that’s putting it remarkably mildly), but at least he didn’t try anything quite as wild as this in England.
Nsereko’ family called in police when the 23-year-old rang them from Thailand to say that he needed 3000 Euros after being kidnapped in Thailand.
Police were suspicious at the low ransom demand, and after investigating the incident arrested Savio for fabricating the incident. He will now stand trial under charges of wasting police time (and presumably attempted fraud).
The case is another episode in a sorry tale for the Ugandan-born forward, who has suffered from severe bouts of depression and mental illness throughout his life. His last club was German third tier outfit SpVgg Unterhaching, but he left there after just three months.
