Rafael Benitez’s approach to managing Inter Milan was akin to that of a jealous partner, according to revelations from Marco Materazzi.
The retired defender claimed Benitez forced him to throw out photos of happy times with his ‘exes’. The ex-Liverpool boss made Materazzi ditch pictures of him with Jose Mourinho and Marcello Lippi which were inside his locker.
Although after hearing Materazzi’s reaction to Benitez’s appointment you can see why the Spaniard was a bit paranoid.
According to Goal.com, Materazzi said:
“Mourinho was number one. His secret was to make the players feel involved in the project,” he explained on television program Undici. “In Madrid [during the 2010 Champions League final], he told me that he was leaving. I said to him: ‘Damn you for leaving me with Benítez.’” [...]
“I did not get on well with Benitez. He made me remove pictures of the most important moments of my career with Mourinho and [Marcello] Lippi from my locker,” he said. “He thought he knew everything, but he was afraid of his own shadow.”
