Reading midfielder Danny Guthrie has been fined two weeks’ wages after he refused to travel to Tuesday night’s relegation six-pointer at Sunderland.
The Royals lost the match 3-0. But Guthrie, aged 25, had left training early on Monday after apparently discovering that he would not be in the starting line-up for the match.
He drove away in the middle of a training session, telling team-mates that he would not be joining them for the trip to the Stadium of Light.
Manager Brian McDermott said: “He made a decision that his head wasn’t right to travel.
“You have to put yourself up to be selected in each and every game, and that means every player.
“His words were his head wasn’t right. He would have been travelling. Any player has to be part of what we are about. We are very much about the group.”
Guthrie moved to Madejski from Newcastle on a free transfer in the summer.
