It’s always a conundrum when it comes to tree decoration toppers. Do you go with the archetypal fairy, the more modern star or stay classic – and keep the summit bare. Tottenham’s Gareth Bale shunned all of those options and opted for something a little different this festive season – a Premier League match ball!
It’s not just any match ball either – the ball represented Bale’s stunning Boxing Day hat-trick against Aston Villa. The golden glut of goals – scored within the space of 25 second-half minutes – sees the Welshman’s scoring account reach nine for the season, just one shy of Spur’s top scorer Jermaine Defoe.
Bale revealed his unconventional decoration on Twitter yesterday, saying:
“Given the time of year, thought I’d give this pride of place…”
Despite the considerably underwhelming décor - more befitting of his nan’s place or a Travel Lodge from the 1980s – we salute Bale’s inventive use of the Nike-sponsored Premier League ball. Who said Christmas was becoming too commercial?
