Gremio fans cause a supporter avalanche

South American football is not necessarily known for its health and safety. Whilst in England we consider netting behind goals after a coin is thrown, we have previously seen fires, brawls between players and fans and referees being beaten up.

Another ugly incident occurred during Gremio’s Copa Libertadores victory over LDU Quito, after former Manchester City midfielder scored a fantastic goal.

Hundreds of people celebrated the goal by rushing down to the front of the stand, forcing those at the front into the fence separating the fans and pitch.

The fence struggled under the weight, and buckled, causing injuries to those at the front, who spilled out onto the pitch side area.
