Video: Stoke’s Ryan Shawcross’ horror challenge on Arsenal’s Laurent Koscielny

Ryan Shawcross is ‘not that type of player’.

We know this because of Tony Pulis’ constant positive reinforcement of the message, and in the player’s defence, after he broke Aaron Ramsey’s leg two years ago he was visibly distraught.

But remembering that challenge, why would he then dive into a tackle against the same team yesterday. It was high and it was poor.

Shawcross is also lucky that referee Chris Foy deemed the 89th minute foul only worthy of a yellow card, which means the Stoke defender will face no further action.

Yeah, I’m a stokie and shawcross gets this wrong, got to be honest about these things, but that’s not to say there was intent so the yellow seems spot on.

Disgusting tackle. Unnecessary on 89 mins. He’s got previous. He knows his every move is being scrutinised against Arsenal. I hope Tiny Pubis, or Grandad-Chav, or whatever he’s known as regrets the ‘He’s not that type of Orc’ comment. Why did MOTD decide not to show it?

It’s dangerous play from both players; both deserve the same punishment. From a referee’s POV, players are expected to refrain from approaching the ball in any manner which is likely to be dangerous to the opponent. The traditional slide tackle technique is when 2 players are both running at the ball, then one of them slides to gain an advantage and hooks his foot around the ball. That’s not what going on here. As you say the ball is in the 50-50 zone between two players who then move toward one another. Both reckless.

If you beleive that this tackle is ‘Shocking’ or a ‘Horror’ tackle, then I’ve got to ask you if you have ever played the game of football or whether you just sit in a padded seat in a stadium watching prima dona’s throw themselves to the floor every time they are breathed upon.

Man up! It’s a tough tackle that warrants a yellow card, which is exactly what it got.

If Arsenal fans had their way, football would be more akin to Morris Dancing. It is a man’s game! Bunch of puffs.

A man’s game indeed. Was men against boys on Saturday. Your boys barely mustered a shot. Stoke is a disease to the game. No idea how anyone can support that dreck. Negative football to the highest degree.

Not denying it was men vs boys in footballing terms. I’d love to watch my team play a beautiful expansive game as Arsenal do but I was brought up watching Stoke in the lower leagues. Just to be rubbing shoulders with the likes of Arsenal is still a treat.
I support that team because I always have and always will whether we are playing Arsenal or Aldershot in the league.
My annoyance is that Arsenal fans are hell-bent on tagging Stoke as thugs. In my opinion, if Arsenal had the ‘orc-like’ thug Shawcross in their back four, they’d probably be challenging for trophies again like they used to.

“Men vs. boys in footballing terms…” What other kind of terms are there. It’s a football match. The only areas you better us in are non-footballing areas.

We’re not winning trophies because of a combination of foreign billions at other clubs and a predatory majority shareholder at our own club. I don’t like it but it is what it is. Could we use a Vieira? Of course. Absolutely. But Vieira was a top footballer on top of being an enforcer. You could try getting players in that mould. After all, Pulis has outspent Arsenal by a net 120m since he arrived at Stoke. He could have bought a team like Swansea’s that plays beautiful free flowing football but he chose not to.

And as for your being labeled as thugs; what do you expect? Honest question: do you believe that Glenn Whelan’s two footed lunging stamp is football? And a follow up: what did you honestly think of his reply where he blamed the City player for what happened?

Intent is the yardstick. If the approach of both players was reckless, they are both at fault. Players think ‘got the ball’ justifies everything but it doesn’t. That’s the way referees are taught these days. In some laws of the game (e.g. handball) it’s explicit, i.e. no intent no foul regardless of how much contact there was.

Here we go.

1. Don’t agree with booing Ramsey. No reason to at all. I think he is a scapegoat to the Stoke fans for the hate campaign that Arsenal have against us.

2. Glenn Whelan’s challenge was poor (much worse than the one in this video) and should have been sent off and in fairness he should have come out and said so. My problem is that Arsenal players make challenges like this and it’s not highlighted anywhere near as much. I remember a Jack Wilshere challenge that was far worse but that goes untalked about.

3. Arsenal fans are very fond of this ‘net’ spend. You have to understand that 5 years ago we were a championship club with a load of journeymen pro’s and have had to invest that amount to even compete in this league. We’ve had to build and very rarely sell players unlike Arsenal who do spend a hell of a lot more than Stoke but are able to recoup transfer fees to level out their ‘net’ spend.
4. I’d rather see us play in Swansea’s style but this is our 5th season in the premier league and only Swansea’s 2nd. I’ve had years of watching us in League 1 and the championship and if we need to play direct football to stop me going to places like Chesterfield on a saturday then long may it continue!

It all boils down to two things to me. Shawcross’s tackle on Ramsey (which eveyone I’ve spoken to apart from Arsenal fans have said there was no intent) and the fact that in the first couple of seasons we beat you at the Brit playing long ball and high pressured game. How dare we beat the beautiful Arsenal by playing within the laws of the game?

Arsenal fans are the most self-righteous, deluded fans out there. I appreciate all types of football but for some reason, Gooners think that the game should only be played their way?
