Womens’ football has thankfully been elevated in recent years with the introduction of the WSL summer league, but it appears that Everton’s Toni Duggan is doing her bit to keep stereotypical views at the forefront of our minds.
The striker has promised to strip off in a bid to promote the game.
“David Beckham has made a living out of getting his kit off and through advertising products and his looks, so I don’t see why there’s a reason women can’t do it as well. Personally I’m interested in doing things like that, but the other girls have different opinions on it.”
Toni has slightly missed the point that David Beckham has done the stripping off for advertising campaigns that were actually nothing to with the game itself. It seems that the forward does seem to be slightly wavering on her idea: “The girls don’t want to be portrayed as that as they’re footballers and they’re good at football, that’s what they do and why should they have to get their kit off to promote it?”.
Whilst I can see her point, it does seem a rather cheap action to just raise some profile, because there is only going to be a certain type of person attracted by that ‘exposure’.
