Everton’s Shane Duffy tweets support for the IRA

Oh deary me.

On the anniversary of the day that an IRA bomb in Warrington killed two children, Everton player Shane Duffy sent a tweet which gave support for the IRA. Which I think you’ll agree is not a particularly bright idea.

After receiving a stream of abuse, the player claimed that his phone had been hacked and that some wag had sent the tweets.

Think it is fair to say that that didn’t stop the abuse coming through, and a couple of Twitter users revealed that they had reported the tweet to Police.

Remember – Twitter is PUBLIC.

As an Evertonian I really hope he didn’t send that tweet,because if he did, I want shut. If he didn’t, questions needs to be asked about the company he keeps.

As we all do, the man has his beliefs. Just because he is a footballer he isn’t allowed to express them? PC nonsense! What are the Police going to do? Charge him with supporting Irish republicanism?

I’ll defend our players to the hilt, but I won’t support anyone who’s loyalties lie with the IRA. If it was him,then he’s got a fooking cheek. If he loves Ireland so much,then he should fook off back there,but we know he won’t,as money talks.

Season ticket holder here who has put £1000s of pounds in over the years. I hope Duffy never puts a Royal blue shirt on again. Just on the anniversary of Warrington when a young innocent Evertonian, shopping for an EFC kit, was murdered by his beloved “ra”. I don’t believe his sorry excuse for a minute that it was someone else. Despite that I think his later tweets were unprofessional, aggressive and insensitive. Does he really believe only Rangers or N.Ireland fans would be offended ? I hope our club sees how serious this is.

I’m Irish, but I’m not defending anyone. In any war there are unfortunately atrocities on both sides. The guy is from Derry which had its own state-sponsored massacre, it is obviously a massively nationalist area. Would his remarks be that dissimilar to, let’s say Leighton Baines, declaring his support for Help For Heroes?

The IRA are terrorist. They set out to murder innocent people. I don’t want anyone playing for my club,who supports such cowardice acts. I wanted Duffy to replace Heitinga,not anymore. Comparing the IRA to our armed forces is ridiculous. Would you be defending Duffy if it had been Al-Qaeda he’d tweeted about?

Probably best to leave this one alone as we are moving away from football, but have you heard of Bloody Sunday? The British Army murdered 26 innocent people, that day the soldiers were no more than terrorists in a state uniform. I’m an Irish nationalist and I don’t agree with violence, but one man’s terrorist is another man’s freedom fighter. Aren’t we all entitled to a belief? Whatever Shane Duffy believes is up to him, I doubt he has actually committed violence in the name of Ireland. If footballers begin to be selected on the basis of their beliefs and behaviour then we may as well all go home, his performance is all that should matter.
By the way, didn’t Gazza once play an imaginary flute in an Old Firm game? On this basis should he have been allowed to then play for Everton?

Aren’t we all entitled to a belief? Not if innocent kids have to die for them. Anyhow, while he’s in this country, he should keep his beliefs to himself. I wouldn’t go to a Muslim country and start having a pop at Mohammed. Like I said,would you be defending him if it had been Al-Qaeda he’d tweeted about? If the IRA stuck to fight soldiers,it wouldn’t be so bad, but they wanted to kill as many Brits as possible. I don’t care if he tweeted it or not,he obviously mixes in then circles,which makes me question the man himself. I want shut of him.
