A group of Galatasaray supporters were caught trying to dig a tunnel into Schalke’s ground to watch last night’s Champions League match.
Desperate to see their side in action, Turkish fans who had arrived in Gelsenkirchen without a ticket began burrowing below the stadium – armed only with their hands.
The reports were confirmed by Schalke sporting director Horst Heldt.
He said: “Some supporters have tried to dig a tunnel with their bare hands.”
The supporters were trying to dig underneath a fence to allow them to get into the stadium, but were thwarted when officials spotted them.
Tickets for the match had been going for 1000€ on the black market.
The tunnel-diggers were unable to witness Umut Bulut scoring a late winner in a 3-4 aggregate win for Gala.
