Denmark striker Nicklas Bendtner has been banned from playing for his country for six months after being arrested for drink driving.
The Juventus player, on loan from Italy, was caught driving down the wrong side of a road in Copenhagen at the weekend.
The 25-year-old tweeted: “I am very very sorry to all my friends and fans.
“It is not ok to drink and drive. I take full responsibility.”
He is set to be charged with a violation of the Road Traffic Act, prompting the Danish Football Federation (DBU) to hand him a six-month ban.
A statement read: “The DBU have demanded that Nicklas Bendtner take six months off to think over his international future.
“The DBU respect the rights of all players to have a private life, but we also have certain rules that need to be met by international players in their public behaviour.”
Bendtner will miss a number of World Cup 2014 qualifiers during his ban.
