I think that we can file this under ‘inventive’.
League One club Notts County is planning to use lamps to heat their pitch and help the grass grow. Nothing unusual there, apart from that the lamps will be sourced from a police raid, and have previously been used to grow cannabis in the local area.
The lamps would otherwise have been crushed by the police, and County stadium manager Greg Smith explains the idea:
“Normally to buy one rig you are looking at between £10,000 and £15,000. We’ve got a main stand that doesn’t allow the light in during the winter. So, we can have them from the start of October through to the end of February, hopefully growing grass for us.”
It’s win-win, we guess, but a fairly eyebrow-raising initiative.
