Manchester City fear Barcelona will attempt to prise captain Vincent Kompany away from them.
The Catalan giants are preparing to make a bid for the Belgium international, according to reports in the Manchester Evening News.
Barca are known to be in the market for a centre-back. They were criticised for the lack of depth in their defensive ranks last season, particularly with the ageing Carlos Puyol now increasingly susceptible to injuries.
They missed out in their attempts to sign Thiago Silva from PSG earlier this summer, and had reportedly turned their attention to his compatriot, Chelsea star David Luiz.
But it now seems that Kompany is also high on their wanted list.
Spanish media reports suggest that Luiz and Kompany were both picked as preferred targets by new Barca boss Tata Martino.
The 27-year-old City skipper signed a new deal last summer to keep him at the Etihad until 2018.
