Benfica defender Ezequiel Garay is on the verge of becoming the first signing of David Moyes’ managerial reign at Manchester United.
The Argentina international isn’t a Moyes signing as such, having been on the champions’ radar for some time.
But the incoming boss – who starts his new job today – is expected to give the go-ahead for the deal to be finalised.
The £17 million transfer can now progress as Benfica have completed the signing of Arsenal de Sarandi centre-back Lisandro Ezequiel Lopez to replace Garay.
Portuguese media reports suggest that a second Premier League club could attempt to hijack the move once Garay’s fee is set, according to the Daily Mirror.
