Newcastle are lining up an improved offer for Saint Etienne striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, with newly appointed director of football Joe Kinnear eager to complete the deal before he goes on holiday.
Reports in The Journal suggest that Kinnear is eager to secure a major signing sooner rather than later to give him some credibility in his new role. Ideally, that would mean bringing Aubameyang to the club before the former Wimbledon manager leaves for a pre-planned family break on Friday.
Kinnear and Magpies scout Graham Carr are lobbying owner Mike Ashley to sanction a new bid for the highly-rated Gabon international.
With the striker catching the eye of plenty of clubs with his performances in Ligue 1 last season, the French side believe they can hold out for their £17million price tag.
Kinnear wants Ashley to put his faith in the club’s new management team by matching that asking price as an early signal of intent and to see off Aubameyang’s numerous other suitors.
