Newcastle have reportedly ended their interest in Wigan’s Arouna Kone after a bizarre U-turn.
Latics sources claim the Magpies are no longer in the race for the striker, according to Tyneside newspaper The Chronicle.
The reason being circulated for the change of heart is that the 29-year-old Ivory Coast forward doesn’t fit the club’s “blueprint” of signing young players whose value will rise (ideally from France).
You would think the fact that Kone doesn’t fit that description is the the sort of thing that could be established with a quick Google search and without the need to submit a transfer bid.
How the Magpies didn’t realise Kone didn’t fit the blueprint is a bit of a mystery, but we reckon it’s got Joe Kinnear’s fingerprints all over it.
Newcastle’s decision to drop out of the race paves the way for Kone to complete a move to Everton, where he will be reunited with former Wigan manager Roberto Martinez.
