Manuel Pellegrini’s reign as Manchester City manager began with defeat as his side lost 2-0 to Supersport United.
The Chilean mirrored Manchester United boss David Moyes’ debut, with both men losing fairly straightforward pre-season fixtures in their first games in charge.
The South African side beat the Premier League runners-up with goals from Mame Niang and Kermit Erasmus.
After the loss, Pellegrini said: “I think it’s always important to win but it’s not the most important thing at the moment.
“We are very far [from top form]. We’ve just had our first week. When pre-season continues, after three weeks or a month, we will see where we are.”
