Mikel Arteta is set to miss the first six weeks of the new season with a thigh injury.
The Arsenal midfielder picked up an injury in training this week. Arsene Wenger said yesterday morning that the Spaniard would be going for a scan which was expected to show a slight strain.
Instead, it revealed a torn quadricep, which will rule the 31-year-old out for around six weeks.
It also means the Gunners will start the season without their vice-captain, with captain Thomas Vermaelen already missing.
Arteta’s thigh problem is the latest setback in a mounting injury crisis for the Gunners. Vermaelen, Nacho Monreal and Abou Diaby are also out of contention, while Bacary Sagna is struggling with his fitness.
