Chelsea are set to make a £40m bid for Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney.
United rejected a £30m bid from the Blues earlier this summer, but Jose Mourinho’s side are expected to return with their improved offer later this week, the Daily Mail reports.
Rooney has missed all United’s pre-season matches so far with a hamstring injury sustained at the start of the champions’ Asian tour. Conspiracy theorists thought this might be a ruse to keep the England international out of harm’s way until his transfer was complete.
But he played 45 minutes in a behind-close-doors friendly against Real Betis yesterday and is expected to feature against Swedish side AIK in Tuesday’s friendly.
The reports suggest their is no ongoing personal rift between Rooney and new United boss David Moyes. Instead, Rooney’s decision to stay or, more likely, push for a move will be dependent on the assurances he gets about being given the central striker’s role at Old Trafford.
Moyes has already made it clear that Robin Van Persie is his first pick for that position.
On that basis, the Sunday Mirror is reporting that the 27-year-old will submit a formal transfer request this week.
