Porto defender Eliaquim Mangala is rumoured to be a transfer target for Manchester United.
Manager David Moyes is still hoping to strengthen his squad before Monday’s transfer deadline. But after experiencing a frustrating summer chasing big-name targets, the Scot is ready to but the marquee signings on the backburner to bring Mangala to Old Trafford.
United scouted the France international during Porto’s match against Maritimo on Sunday. But Barcelona are also known to be monitoring the 22-year-old.
Moyes wants to add an extra centre-back to his squad. Veteran pair Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic are both liable to injuries and are not a long-term option for the former Everton boss. Understudies Phil Jones and Chris Smalling have picked up their fair share of injuries, too, and Jones is often needed at right-back. That left Jonny Evans as the only cover at times during Sir Alex Ferguson’s reign.
Mangala moved to Portugal from Standard Liege in 2011.
Porto have been telling Mangala’s suitors that they will need to activate his £42.4m buy-out clause, but it’s likely that he could be secured for less than that.
