Manchester United are being linked with a £10m move for Southampton left-back Luke Shaw if Everton refuse to sell Leighton Baines to them.
The champions’ “derisory” £12m bid for Baines has not endeared them to Everton. The Toffees could now make a point of refusing to sell the England full-back to former manager David Moyes.
If that proves to be the case, United are lining up 18-year-old Shaw as a contingency plan.
The youngster has been linked with many of top Premier League clubs since putting in a series of impressive performances during his debut Premier League season. He caught the eye again in the Saints’ opener against West Brom at the weekend.
That could encourage United to make a firm offer for the England Under-21 international, who signed a new five-year deal at St Mary’s over the summer. The Daily Express reports that they have already made enquiries about Shaw’s availability.
But the youngster remains a backup plan. Returning with an improved offer for Baines remains United’s plan A.
