A Sunderland fan photographed making a monkey gesture towards West Brom striker Romelu Lukaku has been given an 18-month conditional discharge and been banned from football matches for three years.
Liam Jones, aged 22, admitted causing racially aggravated harassment, alarm or distress during the Black Cats’ home defeat to West Bromich Albion in November 2012.
A photo taken as Lukaku, now back at parent club Chelsea, celebrated a goal at the Stadium of Light showed Jones in the background with his hands near his armpits.
Jones had denied the allegation to the local media, explaining that he had actually been doing a chicken dance.
He pleaded not guilty before magistrates and was due to go on trial next month. But he changed his plea to guilty at a hearing last week.
He was given a three-year football banning order and an 18-month conditional discharge.
