Juan Mata could start for Chelsea against Spurs today after manager Jose Mourinho praised his determination to alter his game to suit Chelsea’s new tactics.
The Portuguese boss said the Spain international had “come in my direction” and that he was impressed by Mata’s attempts to adapt to his style of football.
Mata was not even named in the squad for the Blues’ last Premier League match against Fulham, but Mourinho was pleased with his efforts against Swindon in the Capital One Cup.
He told a press conference: “Yes, I liked him [against Swindon].
“We are speaking about a team that is two divisions below us but professionalism is important no matter who you play against.
“He made a big effort to come in my direction and, when he does that, all I can do is go in his direction. From now, if he keeps working that way, the football I want, the natural tendency is to be in the team.”
