Tottenham fans will allow themselves a wry smile this morning at the news that Gareth Bale could be deployed at left-back by Real Madrid.
Spurs played the Welshman as a full-back at the start of his White Hart Lane career, before realising they had one of the world’s best wingers on their hands.
And the 24-year-old could be starting off in defence at his new club, too.
Injuries to Marcelo and Fabio Coentrao could lead to the world’s most expensive footballer playing at left-back in this weekend’s clash with Villarreal.
Bale was expected to be named as a substitute for the match, but the Daily Mirror is reporting that Real’s double injury blow could see him thrown immediately into the starting line-up.
He said: “I’m just looking forward to getting on the pitch and wherever the manager puts me I’ll be giving 100 per cent.”
