Manchester City are once again in a defensive injury crisis after reasonably priced panic buy Martin Demichelis was ruled out for six weeks with a knee ligament injury.
The Argentina international was signed from Atletico Madrid for £3.5m on Sunday – despite the fact he had only joined them on a free transfer from Malaga earlier in the summer.
But the 32-year-old is now out of contention after picking up the knee injury in his first week of training at Carrington.
Manuel Pellegrini will have to persist with the shaky partnership of Joleon Lescott and Matija Nastasic – who is only recently back from injury himself – because captain Vincent Kompany is still out with a groin injury.
The Chilean has already rejected an even shakier partnership of Lescott and Javi Garcia.
Demichelis became a City target when Nastasic picked up an injury in pre-season, with Pellegrini becoming frustrated in his pursuit of Real Madrid’s Pepe.
Micah Richards is expected to return to full training soon following an injury of his own, which will give City another option.
