Leading the queue of those hoping for a second chance at Sunderland after Paolo Di Canio’s sacking is the club condiments.
Ketchup and mayonnaise – banned by the Italian during his time in charge – have been reinstated in the Black Cats’ canteen with the permission of caretaker manager Kevin Ball.
The temporary boss is trusting the players to moderate their own sauce intake.
Ball said: “I’m not saying to the lads off you go and get a bucket load of ketchup, but condiments are there and available.
“It’s about educating them. You have to respect people and how they want to do things. They’re all going to be treated as individuals and as men.
“The players are professional and know in terms of discipline what is expected. However long I’m in charge, long or short, I won’t tolerate things I feel are unacceptable and the players are aware of that.”
But Ball is keeping some of Di Canio’s rules, including his tight restrictions on when mobile phones can be used.
