CSKA Moscow have responded to criticism of their pitch ahead of tonight’s Champions League clash with Manchester City by painting it green.

The Russian side’s groundsman drove a tractor over the playing surface which spray-painted the grass green. Colleagues did their best to protect advertising hoardings from the paint.

City boss Manuel Pellegrini had early complained about the state of the Arena Khimki’s pitch.

He said: “It’s amazing that they allow us to play in this field, we have to pray that if it rains it will be impossible to play.

“This is the best competition in the world and should not be playing here.”

We’re not sure a lick of paint is quite the solution Pellegrini had in mind.

Before the art and crafts session got underway, a Uefa official said the ptich “has been deemed playable even if it might not look impeccable aesthetically”.
