Italian side Lazio hope to challenge Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United for the signature of Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke.
The Belgium international was expected to leave Villa for one of the Premier League’s top five over the summer. He eventually signed a new deal with Paul Lambert’s side, but interest in the 22-year-old is likely to rise during the January transfer window.
Despite his new four-year deal, Lazio are expected to bid for him when the transfer window re-opens.
The Serie A side are short on attacking options after selling Libor Kozak to Villa.
The Daily Star reports that a bid from Lazio would encourage offers from Benteke’s Premier League suitors.
Chelsea saw a £20m offer rejected in the summer and it will take a larger fee than that to convince Villa to sell their star striker.
Benteke had five goals in six games this season before picking up a hip injury.
