Newcastle are hoping to tie young defender Paul Dummett down to a new long-term contract.

If the 22-year-old puts pen to paper, he will stay at St James’ Park until 2019.

The Wales Under-21 international, born and raised in Newcastle, has seen first-team action at left-back and centre-back this season.

He scored when he came on as a substitute in the 2-2 draw with Newcastle and made his first Premier League start in last weekend’s derby defeat to Sunderland.

And he came off the bench during last night’s Capital One Cup game against Manchester City.

Having come through the ranks at the Magpies’ academy, Dummett spent time on loan at Gateshead and St Mirren. He has established himself as a member of this first-team squad this campaign and has obviously impressed the club’s hierarchy with his performances so far.
