Liverpool linked with £12.4m Benfica youngster Andre Gomes
Liverpool’s hunt for midfield options goes on, with the Reds reportedly weighing up a £12.4m move for Benfica’s Andre Gomes.
Brendan Rodgers appears to have been banking on Basel’s Mohamed Salah becoming his main January signing but, having lost out to Chelsea, is now looking at other options.
That’s taken them to 20-year-old Gomes. The Reds are desperate for more cover in midfield following recent injuries and will move for the Portugal Under-21 international, according to the Sunday Times.
He is not as attack-minded as Salah, but Rodgers is now in greater need of a holding midfielder after Lucas Leiva’s injury and having seen Steven Gerrard struggle in the role in recent games.
The reports suggest that Liverpool will increase their efforts to sign Gomes this week.
He has seen his stock rise since Nemanja Matic’s recent departure to Chelsea and played the full 90 minutes in yesterday’s game against Gil Vicente.
