Manchester United manager David Moyes says he was thrilled at signing Juan Mata – even if he was surprised that Chelsea were prepared to sell the Spaniard.
Speaking at the unveiling of the club record signing, Moyes revealed that he never thought it would be possible to sign Mata during the current transfer window.
But he became aware of the playmaker’s availability over the busy festive period of fixtures.
He said: “I’m thrilled. I got wind of it a month or two ago that it could be a possibility and I never really believed that we would pull it off and I have been saying at all the press conferences that I have had to do that I didn’t think we would get a chance to do much business in January.
“I didn’t think the players we were interested in would be available. But when we got the sniff that Juan could be available then we went after it right away and congratulations to the club and (United executive vice-chairman) Ed Woodwood for getting the deal done and we are delighted to have him here.”
