Local rivals Manchester United and Manchester City are currently involved in a tug of war for Celtic defender Virgil Van Dijk, according to the Daily Telegraph.
The 22-year-old has put in some impressive displays since his £2.6m arrival from FC Groningen last summer.
The centre-back has been linked with clubs including Arsenal, but it is the two Manchester sides who are reportedly keenest to secure the Dutchman.
Both are in need of new defenders. United will lose captain Nemanja Vidic this summer, and Rio Ferdinand is also likely to leave Old Trafford at the end of the season.
City have been criticised for the lack of depth in their defensive ranks. Manuel Pellegrini does not appear to rate Joleon Lescott, but his alternative option, Martin Demichelis, has not looked of sufficient quality to partner Vincent Kompany when he has played.
A bid in the region of £10m will be needed to secure Van Dijk, who is under contract until 2017.
