Ex-Barcelona and Spurs star Gica Popescu jailed for tax evasion and money laundering

Former Tottenham player Gica Popescu has been jailed for three years and one month for tax evasion and money laundering related to dodgy transfer deals.

The ex-Romania international has been imprisoned just a day before he was due to become the new president of the Romanian FA.

Popescu and seven other officials were sentenced today after irregularities were found in 12 transfers of players from Dinamo Bucharest, Rapid Bucharest, Otelul Galati and Gloria Bistrita to foreign clubs between 1999 and 2005.

Prosecutors claim the deals cost the state €1.7m and cost clubs €10m because Popsecu and the other defendants registered false sums in relation to the transfers.

The 46-year-old played for Spurs in the 1994/95 season after being signed by Ossie Ardiles, but left to join Barcelona after a single campaign.

He cannot appeal his sentence.
