Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville, Phil Neville, Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt are set to become the new owners of non-league side Salford City.

The five Manchester United legend – part of the famous Class of 1992 youth team – have agreed a deal to buy the Northern Premier League Division One North side.

United player-coach Giggs said: “We want to use our football experience and knowledge to nurture young talent.”

The takeover will be completed in the summer, subject to Football Association and Northern Premier League approval.

Gary Neville said: “Salford City represents those early years, the commitment, hunger, enthusiasm, desire and spirit of football and I am very excited about this venture.”

Brother Phil, also part of David Moyes’ coaching staff at United, added: “It is important to safeguard the hard work that is done in the lower leagues and it is going to be exciting to be able to feed our experience into the young players.”

Salford are currently 11th in their division, which is in the eighth tier of English football.

The United ‘consortium’ were recently spotted attending a Salford game prompting whispers about the takeover.
