Man Utd representatives ‘in Portugal to seal William Carvalho deal’
Manchester United officials are in Portugal to thrash out a deal for Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho, according to Portuguese media reports.
Chelsea had been linked with a move for Carvalho, with United’s efforts to sign the 22-year-old having gone very quiet since David Moyes left the club.
But they are now aiming to finalise a move for a player they scouted nearly 20 times last season, claims Portuguese website zerozero.pt.
They backup the suggestions that Jose Mourinho is keen to take the Portugal international to Stamford Bridge but indicate that United are still the frontrunners to sign him.
Carvalho has a buy-out clause of €45m, but it is thought Sporting will allow him to leave for less.
The reports suggest that United’s record of negotiating with the Portuguese side, for Cristiano Ronaldo in 2003 and Nani in 2007, could stand them in good stead.
Carvalho was one of the few positives in a disappointing World Cup campaign for Portugal. He added power and strength to the base of the midfield, and emerged with some decent passing statistics.
