Angel Di Maria has revealed Cristiano Ronaldo was the reason he stayed at Real Madrid for as long as he did after the Argentine fell out with the club’s hierarchy.
The 26-year-old was forced out of Real Madrid as the club looked to recoup some of the cash from signing James Rodriguez and Toni Kroos this summer.
Following interest from Paris Saint Germain it was United who landed the attacker for a British transfer record of £59.7m.
Di Maria wrote an open letter to Madrid fans after leaving where he hit out at the board for mistreating him during his time at the club.
And the winger has now revealed if it was not for his good friend Ronaldo he would have left Real last season.
“The truth is that I have a great relationship with Cristiano Ronaldo and I stayed at Madrid last season thanks to him,” he told AS.
“I left Madrid in the best possible way, by winning La Decima. In my farewell letter, I said exactly how I felt from the first day at the Bernabeu.”
