Man Utd want Victor Valdes as David De Gea’s replacement, not backup
Victor Valdes is set to become Manchester United new first-choice goalkeeper, according to reports.
The former Barcelona man is currently training with United as he completes the final stages of his rehabilitation from a serious knee injury he sustained in March. He is widely expected to sign a contract with the club once he is fully fit.
When he first linked up with the Red Devils it was assumed that they were seeking strong cover for David De Gea. But Valdes is actually seen as De Gea’s replacement, claims The Independent.
De Gea, aged 23, is persistently linked with a move to Real Madrid to become their new number one.
With his contract due to expire at the end of next season, United will soon be in a position where they will have to cash-in on their young keeper or risk losing him for nothing if he hasn’t signed a new deal.
Valdes, aged 31, is reportedly seen as a useful contingency option if Louis van Gaal’s side are forced to part company with De Gea next summer.
