Teenager arrested over racist tweet at Arsenal’s Danny Welbeck after goal vs Man Utd
A 15-year-old boy has been arrested over a racist tweet aimed at Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck following his celebration in scoring the winning goal against his former side Manchester United in the FA Cup last week.
The teenager, from Salisbury in Wiltshire, was held and questioned on suspicion of racial abuse following the posting on Twitter.
A Wiltshire Police spokesman, as quoted by the Mirror, said: “A 15-year-old male from the Salisbury area was arrested on the evening of March 12 on suspicion of racial abuse. He has been released on police bail until April 13. The investigation is ongoing.”
Welbeck was sold by Louis van Gaal in the summer and after scoring the vital goal that sent the Gunners through to the semi-finals, could not hide his delight.
Welbeck, who has scored 12 goals this season for his new club, received a mix reaction from fans for his controversial celebration with some unhappy at him gloating while others understood why he did not feel obliged to hold back.
The England striker spent six seasons at United after coming through their youth ranks and struggled to nail down a regular slot in the team, with him often forced to play out wide instead.
