Former Liverpool target Virgil van Dijk suffers 4-0 defeat to Aston Villa U23s on comeback
Virgil van Dijk’s Southampton return did not go to plan as he and the Saints’ under-23 side suffered a 4-0 defeat to Aston Villa last night.
The wantaway Dutchman, who had been frozen out at St Mary’s as he sought a transfer to Liverpool during the summer window, played the full 90 minutes at Walsall’s Bescot Stadium.
In his first outing of the season for Southampton, Van Dijk and the Saints defence were beaten twice by Jordan Cox in the first half and by Corey Taylor and Callum O’Hare in the second half to condemn them to a comprehensive defeat.
The scoreline did not reflect the fact that the south-coast club had a centre-back who had been the subject of a £60m transfer tussle at the heart of their defence.
A second-string outing in front of an attendance of 470 is also in stark contrast to the prospect of a Champions League game against Sevilla, which is what Van Dijk would be preparing for if he had got his move to Anfield.
