Jurgen Klopp reveals Mohamed Salah doubts
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has revealed he had doubts over signing star winger Mohamed Salah.
The Egypt international, aged 25, joined the Reds from Roma for a £34m fee in the last transfer window.
But German boss Klopp has indicated that the deal was driven by the club’s scouting team, who were adamant the player was ready to join them. The manager had doubts about Salah’s ability to cope with the physicality of the Premier League.
Salah had struggled to make his mark during his stint at Chelsea and Klopp thought he might be too skinny to succeed in English football. After the pacy attacker’s 13 goals in his first 17 Premier League games for the Reds, Klopp is ready to accept he might have been wrong.
He told his press conference ahead of today’s game against Bournemouth: “His speed is his speed, it doesn’t depend on which league he’s in. That is clear. Of course we had to look at a lot of his games to see about other parts, physicality, being strong enough for challenges.
“But you see now, he is. I met him of course at one point and he looked ready. If you watch him only on television he looks quite skinny, I said before the scouting department did a fantastic job around him. They didn’t get out of our ears. It was 100 per cent, he is ready, he is ready.
“At one point, we were all sure he was ready. And that’s how it looks now.”
Klopp’s outstanding start to his Anfield career has already seen him linked with a transfer to European champions Real Madrid.
