One thing about the English Premier League is that, generally it is won by the same teams. Only four sides have won the league since it was formed, and three of them are the favourites this year (Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal). However, even now, with the season well underway, there are many things that people who fancy a bet on the football can wager their money on, other than the title winner.

Although the title race looks to be between just one or two teams, the race to avoid the trapdoor of relegation into the Championship looks as open as it has been in years. There are usually one or two candidates at this time that stand out as almost certain candidates for relegation but this year, with only nine points separating Europa League qualification in fifth place and the bottom of the table, it looks like there could be some good value out there for odds on relegation and teams at the bottom making a shock European push.

The race for the Premier League’s golden boot is also one that offers good choice and the opportunity of a sizeable win for punters as it has been taken by underdogs in the past. Just look at Teddy Sheringham’s top-scoring campaign in 1993 and Kevin Phillips shocking fans by winning the Premier League and European Golden Boot in the year 2000 and you will see that there have been a few outsiders who have been able to win the top goal-scorer award.

If you look at last season as an example, you will also see that Wayne Rooney was a clear favourite at one stage before being injured and allowing the incredible Didier Drogba to win the award; scoring 30 goals in the league. It is always a good idea therefore to have a look at the scorer’s charts and see if you can find any value in the odds.
